They are slightly warmer in the mids, slightly more detailed, the bass goes a bit deeper and they sound more dynamic, they also interract with the room a bit less than my Spendors. I still flip flop with the idea of getting a pair of SCM19, as they are a definite step up sonically from the SCM11. Play Angel by Massive Attack, and the bass is crisp as anything.

But for electronica and funk records, the SCM19 are incredible and I’ve not heard better. Perhaps a little too dry at times, when you want a bit more cosseting bloom on acoustic, jazz, folk, indie etc. It goes markedly deeper than the SCM11, but is just so clean, punchy and rhythmic. Overall, preference was still for the Spendors as all rounders, for most music types. Sibilance can be pronounced on lesser recordings, and they could come across a bit cold and detached (at times). They sound slightly less natural and far less forgiving. The bass doesn’t go as deep neither are they as warm or tonally inviting. Because I am so aclimatised to my Spendor Classic 3/1, the presentation came across as quite different. I demoed the ATC SCM19 out of curiosity a couple of months ago. Still, overall it’s a great speaker and sometimes I wonder why I don’t own them, as they are such a versatile and easy to accommodate speaker for average uk domestic rooms.

It also had a tendency to sound slightly anemic on some music, and/or at lower volume levels. For me, bass only went very slightly deeper than small sealed ls3/5a type speakers, and wasn’t quite satisfying enough for me on a lot of standard – thinner sounding recordings (great on bass heavy tracks though, as it never dominated). When I first demoed the ATC SCM11, I thought it sounded fast, tight, detailed, cohesive, easy to place, generally tonally great, but still a slight unforgiving character in the upper mids / lower treble. Both the ATC SCM11 and SCM19 are two of my favorite ever speakers home demoed.
